Avoid Health Care Errors and Save Lives: Improve Public Understanding of Nursing

Speaker: Sandy Summers, RN, MSN, MPH
Founder and Executive Director, The Truth About Nursing

Health care errors are the third leading cause of death in the United States and a drain on health care resources that is estimated at $4.7 trillion per year globally. How can we address this critical problem? Strengthen nursing! Nurses are the professionals who identify and prevent most health care errors before they happen. We must look closely at the factors keeping nurses from preventing the remainder of errors, as Sandy Summers, RN, MSN, MPH, shows in this lively presentation. Sandy, founder and executive director of the Truth About Nursing, connects the dots between an under-respected nursing profession and the high incidence of health care errors. Many decision-makers see nurse staffing as a burden instead of an asset. And nurses' input on care decisions and systems is not always welcomed. But fully understood and empowered with adequate resources, nurses can use their advanced skills to monitor patients, detect signs of deterioration, and take appropriate actions to save lives. Sandy Summers will explore proven strategies to help all health care decision-makers build understanding of nursing's value and empower nurses to improve care.
